Recycling is a fragrant affair!
Topic of the work:
The packaging sector uses the largest quantities of plastic of all industrial sectors. Packaging such as films, cups or bottles have a short useful life. The current mostly linear use of plastic products leads to high greenhouse gas emissions and considerable environmental pollution. A major obstacle to the widespread use of high recycled content in packaging products is the strong odor produced during processing and in the product. In order to increase product acceptance and achieve a sustainable, resource-efficient circular economy in the area of lightweight packaging, the “SmellStop” project aims to minimise odour pollution.

The work is written in this working group:
In the “Sustainable materials from recycling processes” working group, we are working on closing plastic cycles and opening up new fields of application for recycled plastics.
Objective:
The aim of your thesis is to research the odor reduction of film recyclates through various process engineering measures and the comprehensive characterisation of the odor-active compounds. These include experiments on gas chromatography with mass spectrometry and with the aid of AI-supported in-line metal oxide sensors.
