Functionalising plastic surfaces Lecture and exercise

Plastic components are often given a coating in order to adjust the range of properties of the surfaces and adapt them to specific requirements. The modification of surfaces can fulfill purely decorative purposes, serve informational purposes (application of markings, warning or operating instructions, advertising) or have a technical-functional character. These include, for example, improved light resistance, electromagnetic shielding, the ability to self-clean or improved grip by roughening or flocking the surface. The different processes are discussed in detail in the lecture. An excursion to a plastics processing company and an exercise in IKV’s plasma laboratory make it possible to experience the processes in practice.
Contents of the lecture
The lecture provides an overview of the most common processes for the treatment and coating of plastic surfaces. The different processes are explained in principle and their technical implementation is considered. In addition to painting and printing, processes such as electroplating and low-pressure metallization are discussed. Special emphasis is placed on modern plasma technology, the fundamentals and current applications of which are explained using many examples. All processes are subjected to an in-depth examination of the process parameters and their effect on the result. At the same time, the characteristic properties, the main and secondary functionalities of the surfaces produced are discussed using examples. Further examples are used to learn how to evaluate defects and damage and how to trace their causes. The requirements for the plastic surface are also discussed in detail for all processes.
Exercise accompanying the lecture
The exercise is divided into two parts. In the first part, a full-day excursion is planned to a plastics processing company that typically uses many of the processes covered in the lecture. There, students will have the opportunity to take a close look at how the technology is integrated into production and to discuss practical aspects with experts on site. The second part of the exercise takes place in IKV’s plasma laboratory. Here, students are given an overview of plasma and low-pressure technology and experience the systems in operation.
