Plant engineer

Industrial mechanic for fine appliances

As an industrial mechanic, you will manufacture components, machines and molds that are indispensable in industry and trade. You will learn how to read and create design drawings and discover the fascinating world of materials and their connections – be it through welding, soldering or bonding. In addition to manual skills, you will bring modern technologies into play: you will work with computer-controlled machines and learn the basics of control and regulation technology. Through your work in the research environment and the test laboratories and pilot plants at IKV, you will specialise in individual custom-made products – so you will be well prepared for your start in industry or trade after your apprenticeship!

Duration of apprenticeship: three and a half years

Admission requirements at RWTH: technical college entrance qualification or good secondary school leaving certificate

Personal requirements: Spatial imagination, technical understanding, manual dexterity

Industrial mechanics manufacture – sometimes very specific – parts, assemblies, devices, equipment and small machines.

Materials tester in plastics technology

As a materials tester for plastics technology, you will ensure that plastics and plastic products are free of defects and are of consistent quality. You plan tests, carry out inspections and analyze materials for their composition, structure and properties. After a case of damage, you will investigate why a component has failed and help to find the cause. You will prepare samples for various tests, operate test equipment and measure properties such as hardness or deformability. You will evaluate your results in the context of the production process and help to identify sources of error and define corrective measures. Finally, you will carefully document all your results.

Duration of training: 3.5 years

Entry requirements: Secondary school leaving certificate, good grades in mathematics, physics and German

Office management assistant

As an office management assistant, you will take on a variety of tasks in everyday office life. You will organise correspondence, create presentations, procure office supplies and coordinate appointments. You will also prepare meetings and organise business trips. You will also be involved in personnel planning and purchasing external services. You will write invoices and check incoming payments. In research, you will assist with project controlling and accounting for project-related expenses.

Duration of training: 3 years

Electronics technician – devices and systems

As an electronics technician for devices and systems, you will become an all-round talent in electronics. You will get to know all our test facilities and pilot plants. You will manufacture electronic components, learn how to install and configure programs and operating systems and test components for functionality. But that’s not all! You will also be responsible for creating documentation and system documents. During your apprenticeship, you will work closely with scientists and engineers, supporting them in the implementation of projects in test operations. This also means that you will set up production and testing machines and take care of maintenance and servicing. As you gain experience, you will track down faults, replace defective parts and instruct colleagues on how to operate the equipment.

Duration of training: 3.5 years
