Materials science of plastics Lecture and exercise

The lecture provides basic knowledge and understanding of the complex material behavior of plastics.
Contents of the lecture
The content forms the basis for engineers to develop products that are safe to use and to implement design and manufacturing processes appropriate to the material. After a basic consideration of the properties of plastics, the behavior in the melt, the cooling of melts and the formation of internal structures are discussed. The course also highlights the importance of nano- and macro-scale structures in the material. Mechanical parameters are presented and stiffness and strength analyses are carried out. Furthermore, testing possibilities for the characterization of plastic properties will be demonstrated.
Exercise accompanying the lecture
Small group exercises accompanying the lecture put the theoretical knowledge taught into a practical context. In the IKV laboratories, IKV staff introduce students to the most important methods discussed and involve them intensively in carrying out specific measurements, calculations and evaluations of the results.
