Application of material fundamentals in plastics processing Lecture and exercise

Test-Studium-Vorlesung-Anwendung-werkstofflicher-Grundlagen

The lecture “Application of materials science principles in plastics processing” provides a comprehensive overview of development processes in the plastics industry. The individual steps from the development of new materials to their application in industrial practice are presented.

Contents of the lecture

At the beginning of the lecture, the material properties of selected plastics and how they can be specifically influenced by additives and fillers are described in the product development section. In the subsequent application development, both general guidelines for the plastic-compatible design of components and their application are presented using practical examples (e.g. plastic/metal hybrid technology or electrical and electronic applications). A lecture on processing technology provides an overview of manufacturing processes for plastic components, processing errors and the general influence of process parameters on component quality and the resulting component properties. Finally, numerical component design and optimization as well as the simulation and measurement methods used in the plastics industry are explained. Specific practical application examples accompany the explanations in the lecture and make the various process steps from material selection and development through to application clear and comprehensible.

Exercise accompanying the lecture

The exercise takes the form of an excursion to LANXESS Deutschland GmbH in Dormagen. Here, students will experience the main topics of processing technology and compounding, product development in the laboratory, component and material testing as well as application development in the daily practice of a renowned company in the plastics industry. Literature: Presentations for the lecture will be made available to registered students in the RWTHmoodle learning room.
