We support companies in the selection, characterisation and optimisation of materials for robust processes and high-quality products.
Leitthemen-Kreislaufwirtschaft-2

We offer comprehensive services in the field of materials development in order to optimally adapt your products to specific requirements. With our expertise and state-of-the-art technologies, we support companies in the selection, characterisation and optimization of materials for sustainable and future-proof production.

If you are dealing with one or more of these questions, you have come to the right place.

Is my material suitable for a new process or a new application?

How can I improve the properties of my existing material, e.g. in terms of strength, heat resistance or processing?

Which material is best suited for my product, taking into account technical, economic and sustainability requirements?

How can we integrate recyclates into our products without compromising quality?

Our services in materials development include

From material made from recycled material to demonstrator DF.Fotografie

Variety of materials: We work with all material groups – from thermoplastics, elastomers and thermosets to fiber-reinforced plastics (FRP) and polyurethanes (PU).

Material characterisation: We use comprehensive analyses and test methods to precisely determine the properties of your materials.

Test specimen production: We produce standardised test specimens to test material properties under defined conditions.

Material selection and preparation of specifications: We help you select the ideal material and prepare specifications that meet your technical and economic requirements.

Processability testing: We test the processability of materials in different processes to ensure optimum results.

Compounding: Using modern processes such as additivation, mixing, degassing and purification, we develop customised material formulations.

Developing and testing foams: We support the development and testing of foamed products that open up new applications and potential savings.

Testing new materials: We test innovative materials and support you in the market launch of new material solutions.

Processing recycled materials: With our expertise, we create high-quality materials from recycled materials and actively contribute to the circular economy.

Broad range of options for materials development in our technical centres and laboratories

At IKV we offer w. We cover a broad spectrum of processing methods and can use these specifically for your tests. Whether it is the development of new materials that are precisely tailored to your requirements or the optimization of existing materials – we combine innovative approaches with practical test methods. A particular advantage for our partners is that in many cases we can test the processability of the materials directly on site at the institute under realistic conditions. This not only provides you with well-founded test results, but also valuable insights into the practical feasibility of your materials.

During compounding, the plastic granules and additives are taken up, melted and mixed in the extruder.

As Europe’s leading plastics technology research institute, the IKV at RWTH Aachen University is our pre-testing centre for new materials and technologies. Our joint projects deliver a better understanding of how the next generation of materials can be developed while using more sustainable manufacturing approaches.

Best Practice

Examples of successful projects in practice

Validierung-Materialmodelle

Validation of material models for a polystyrene material

IKV supported a university in the validation of a material model for a polystyrene material. The aim was to record stress-strain curves at different temperatures.
Werkstoffqualifizierung-Additive-Fertigung

Material qualification for automotive applications for a material manufacturer

The project included a design concept for the strand forming unit, the determination of heat flow and cooling capacity as well as processing tests with the client’s material.
Sumitomo-Chemical-Europe

Development of a technology demonstrator made of LCP-LGF for use in battery housings of electric vehicles

As part of a bilateral development project between Sumitomo Chemical Europe S.A./N.V. and IKV, a demonstrator geometry of a battery housing cover for electric vehicles was developed.

Together with you, we develop innovative materials for your products

IKV combines scientific excellence with practical implementation to successfully advance your projects. From selection and characterization to optimization, we develop materials that make your products more efficient, sustainable and marketable. Rely on IKV’s materials expertise and benefit from tailor-made solutions for your individual requirements.
