Best practice: Validation of material models Experimental determination of stress-strain curves for a polystyrene material

Production of samples in the IKV extrusion technical centre

Material models are used to describe the behavior of materials under various influences. They form the basis of material and process simulations that allow statements to be made about the processing behavior of polymer materials and future component properties. The validity of the material models must be proven by practical tests. IKV supported a university in the validation of a material model for a polystyrene material, as the corresponding technical equipment was not available there. The aim was to record stress-strain curves at different temperatures.

Production of film samples

In the IKV technical center, sheet and film samples were produced from the impact-modified polystyrene material provided. From these samples, plate samples were cut and prepared for biaxial stretching.

Step-1

Tests on biaxial stretching

Step-2
Measurement of extensional viscosity using a membrane-inflation rheometer IKV

The membrane-inflation rheometer (MIR) developed at IKV was used for the biaxial stretching tests. IKV defined a test procedure for the biaxial stretching of 5 film samples at different temperatures and stretch rates.

Recording the stress-strain diagrams

Stress and strain were recorded during biaxial stretching in the membrane-inflation rheometer. Several measurements were carried out for each process point in the test plan. Stress-strain curves were created from the data for each process point. The recorded data was prepared as an Excel file and made available to the client.
