ForCO2-foamed TPS strands, the influence of process-side setting parameters such as nozzle temperature and blowing agent content on the degree of expansion, foam density and cell size was evaluated. Under suitable conditions, expansion ratios of more than 3.5 and foam densities of around 0.34 kg/m³ could be achieved. A foaming agent mixture based onCO2 and ethanol was used to carry out the foam film tests. The use of ethanol as a co-propellant allows the processing window to be extended, as the solubility of the primary propellant CO2 within the plastic melt is increased by the co-expanding agent. This enables processing at lower process temperatures (nozzle temperature at 95 °C) and the realization of lower foam densities. With the use of 2.6 wt.% CO2 and 1.1% by weight ethanol, a flexible foam film with a foam density of 0.12 g/cm³ and an average cell diameter of 0.24 mm could be realized. The project was thus able to successfully produce a flexible foam film based on thermoplastic starch using a physical blowing agent, which can be used industrially as a more sustainable foam packaging film, for example.
