Feeding Plasma for a Good Cause: Gas Supply for Sustainable Packaging Coating

Call for Applications: Bachelor’s Thesis or Master’s Thesis

The goal of your work is to develop and commission the supply of process gas for recyclable barriers.

Topic of the Thesis:

Thin barrier layers are applied by means of plasma coating (PECVD or PEALD) to produce fully recyclable plastic packaging. These layers significantly improve the barrier properties (e.g. against oxygen or CO₂) without impairing the recyclability of the packaging.
One challenge in this process is the precise, reproducible and reliable feeding of the gaseous or volatile educt into the interior of the hollow body, where the layer deposition takes place. Therefore, a setup is to be developed in which the process gases are stored, treated and fed into the reactor according to the process requirements.

The Thesis is written in this Working Group:

In the Plasma and Surface Technology working group, recyclable barrier layers and the corresponding state-of-the-art plant technology are developed and, among other things, their permeation behavior for gases is examined. To this end, modeling and simulation as well as process technology are being investigated.

Objective:

The aim of your work is to develop a setup in which the process gases are stored, treated and fed into the reactor according to the process requirements. Among other things, the requirements must be defined and suitable components selected.

Your Tasks:

Conceptual design and development of the process gas supply Characterisation of a barrier layer system
Design of the process gas feed Investigation of the influence of the feed characteristics on layer uniformity along the inner wall and layer growth rates with different process parameters
Validation of volume flows, test operation Flow simulation for critical components

Your Profile:

  • Enrolled in technical or scientific studies (mechanical engineering, process engineering, materials science, physics, …)
  • Experience with practical experiments and the construction of systems is helpful
  • Independent processing of complex problems
  • Interest in practical experiments and working with experimental plant technology
