Recycling of long-fiber-reinforced thermoplastics

Bachelor’s Thesis or Master’s Thesis

How can LFT recyclates be processed gently and combined with recycled UD tapes to produce high-performance, circular components?

Topic of the work:

The focus is on the recycling of long-fiber-reinforced thermoplastics, which are frequently used in structural applications in the automotive sector. These are processed in pressing processes and recycling routes have not yet been established. Mechanical property losses that can occur during recycling are to be specifically compensated for by pressing with continuous fiber-reinforced tapes, which themselves are also returned to the material cycle. The aim is to maximize the proportion of recycled material and thus increase resource efficiency and profitability.

Concept of the processing steps for maximizing the recyclate content in LFT components

The work is related to this research project:

The work is being carried out in the thermoplastic FRP working group. As part of the “Loop-LFT” project, we want to find ways of using recycled materials to produce equivalent, high-quality structural components using only (~100%) recycled materials wherever possible.

Objective:

The aim of the thesis is to optimize the manufacturing processes in order to enable a high and application-oriented use of recycled materials in structural components.

Your task:

Familiarization with the state of the art for processing LFT recyclates Familiarization with the state of the art for processing LFT recyclates and tape production and processing
Production of LFT components with 100% recycled content using the pressing process Adaptation of the tape production process for the use of recycled matrix materials
Determination of the fiber length distributions and the resulting mechanical characteristics of the LFT components Production of LFT sandwich components with LFT recyclate and recycling tape
Determination of a suitable process window for the most fiber-friendly processing of recyclates investigation of the influence of the recycling steps on the hybrid material produced
Determination of the resulting mechanical characteristic values of the LFT sandwich components
