Recording of critical material parameters

Project work or research laboratory

The aim of your work is to investigate fatigue behaviour by determining critical material properties for various plastics.

Topic of the work:

The mechanical behavior of dynamically stressed materials is significantly more limited than with one-off quasi-static stress. For this reason, correct assumptions must be made when designing dynamically stressed plastic components. The investigation of the mechanical behavior under dynamic stress is carried out on so-called hydropulsers, which determine critical stresses and critical strains in the material at appropriately staggered load levels in addition to the failure point. The critical material parameters determined here provide information about the load-bearing capacity of the materials if a high number of load cycles is required. The fracture behavior is then analyzed using microscopic methods. Knowledge of the load limit and the type of failure are valuable property values in material testing, for example to define areas of application.

The work is written in this working group:

The research laboratory is carried out in the working group for dynamic materials testing at the Center for Plastics Analysis and Testing. This working group works closely with industry to evaluate components and materials during the course of their operational use or to enable the quality of new components to be evaluated.

Objective:

  • Production of suitable test specimens from panel materials
  • Testing of at least 2 different materials in the load increase test
  • Analysis of the fracture surfaces using microscopic methods
  • Comparative evaluation of the available materials based on the results obtained
