Effect of environmental influences on mechanical parameters

Research laboratory

The aim of your work is to investigate the effect of environmental influences on thermoplastic materials and to demonstrate the aging behavior of the materials.

Topic of the work:

The mechanical behavior of materials is sometimes heavily dependent on external influences. These include media and UV exposure. For this reason, it is essential that the possible change in the material due to environmental influences and the associated ageing is taken into account when designing plastic components. To this end, accelerated ageing studies are to be carried out. The investigations are divided into several work packages. First, two materials are stored in a UV chamber and in a medium (e.g. tempered water) for a defined period of time. After storage, the mechanical behavior of the accelerated aged materials is examined on a so-called universal testing machine in both tensile and 3-point bending tests and evaluated in comparison to the non-stored materials. In addition, the hardness of the materials is determined on a hardness tester. The material characteristics determined in the process provide information about the influence of the environment on the materials. With the help of the knowledge gained, a statement can be made about the aging behavior of the materials.

The work is written in this working group:

The research laboratory is carried out in the working group for quasi-static materials testing in the Center for Plastics Analysis and Testing (KAP) at IKV. This working group works closely with industry to evaluate components and materials during the course of their operational use or to enable the quality of new components to be evaluated.

Objective:

  • Production of suitable test specimens from panel materials
  • Examination of at least two different materials
  • Mechanical tests (tension, bending, hardness)
  • Comparative evaluation of the available materials based on the results obtained

Your task:

  • Selection of two materials
  • Manufacture of test specimens
  • Implementation and evaluation of analysis procedures
  • Preparation of the written elaboration

These are your benefits:

  • Work in a young, motivated team
  • Independent work with intensive support
  • Experimental work on testing machines and analysis devices
  • Individual coordination of tasks and time frame
  • Immediate start possible
