Fiber-reinforced plastics (FRP) combine high mechanical properties with low weight and are often manufactured using the resin transfer molding (RTM) process. Typically, the components are fully cured during this process. However, partially cross-linked epoxy resins can exhibit pronounced plastic deformation behavior, thereby allowing for subsequent forming. For fiber-reinforced test specimens, it has not yet been sufficiently clarified how process control in the RTM process influences the achievable degree of cross-linking and the resulting properties.
The work is related to this research project:
The “EPForm” research project is investigating how partially cross-linked thermosets and fiber-reinforced composites can be thermally formed after the fact. Material information and manufacturing methods are already available for raw resin samples. These are to be applied to fiber-reinforced test specimens. By systematically varying selected RTM process parameters, the goal is to reproducibly produce partially cross-linked FRP test specimens and make them available for subsequent forming and testing experiments.

Your profile:
- A degree in engineering or the natural sciences from RWTH or a university of applied sciences (FH), e.g., mechanical engineering, plastics engineering, materials science, CES, or a comparable field
- Interest in fiber-reinforced composites, reactive resin systems, and experimental work
- A meticulous, structured, and independent approach to work
- Previous experience working with reactive resins, DSC, or mechanical materials testing is a plus
