Targeting artificial intelligence for the plastics industry
With the new KI4KI project – Artificial Intelligence for the Plastics Industry – the IKV is launching a cross-industry initiative together with project partners to promote the systematic use of AI methods throughout the entire plastics product life cycle. The aim is to connect companies from the plastics and digital industries for the practical implementation of digital and AI-supported solutions.
The industry is facing far-reaching challenges: rising energy prices, a shortage of skilled workers, volatile markets and stricter regulatory requirements are meeting a growing demand for individualized products. At the same time, digitalization and AI methods offer concrete solutions to meet these challenges in a future-proof manner.
Structured project process in four phases
The “KI4KI” project is designed as a systematic process in four phases:
- Phase 1: Needs and market analysis
The basis is a status and potential analysis based on anonymous interviews with the participating companies. This is complemented by the establishment of an interdisciplinary network with four face-to-face meetings over the entire duration of the project. - Phase 2: Understanding
In seven expert talks, participants will gain practical basic knowledge about AI in plastics processing. Structured documentation of the findings ensures that knowledge is firmly anchored in the company. - Phase 3: Enable
Three interactive workshops and the development of competence maps and technology matrices support the companies in identifying and prioritizing specific fields of application. - Phase 4: Apply
In bilateral consultations and using three real technology demonstrators, individual implementation strategies are developed and the first AI applications are put into operational practice.
Target group and opportunities for participation
The project is aimed at all players along the plastic product life cycle: material manufacturers, mechanical engineers, software developers, product designers, plastics processors, testing laboratories, measurement technology manufacturers, IT and digitalization partners and raw material suppliers.
Free webinar on June 24, 2025
Before the project begins, IKV invites interested companies to a free webinar on June 24, 2025 at 3:00 pm. Participants will gain a comprehensive insight into specific applications of AI methods in the plastics industry as well as an insight into the planned consortium project.
