Research Laboratory
© IKVTopic of the work:
Fractography is an essential component in the failure analysis of plastics. In the context of determining the cause of damage, this is based on the method of being able to draw conclusions about the presumed load situation at the moment of failure from visible microscopic fracture characteristics. Recognizing, assigning and interpreting these characteristics is partly subjective and varies from user to user. The occurrence and shape of numerous fracture features such as ramps, steps, lines, etc. play an important role here.
A fracture database is currently being set up at IKV to systematically record fracture characteristics for specific materials and loads. The idea of developing and using AI-supported image recognition for fracture feature detection is motivated by the data basis and the uncertainty of interpretation described above.
The work is written in this working group:
The research work carried out in the microscopy laboratory at the Center for Plastics Analysis and Testing (KAP) provides significant support for industry and the institute’s own research in the validation of production parameters. Another focus is on systematic damage analysis in order to precisely identify the causes of faults and bridge the gap between research and industrial implementation. Through these analyses, the laboratory provides essential findings for the optimization of production processes and improved component quality.
Objective:
Within the framework of this research laboratory, conventional programs or methods for automated image evaluation are to be identified and tested or evaluated with regard to their suitability for the above task (state of the art). Furthermore, the development and programming of our own image analysis algorithms (e.g. Python-based) and integration into the existing database structure is a worthwhile goal for IKV in the long term.
Your task:
- You research current programs and options for local image feature recognition
- You feed the AI with data, train models for breakage characteristics and optimize parameters
- You validate the results and evaluate them for their practical suitability
Your profile:
- Technical or scientific studies (e.g. computer science, mechanical engineering, materials science…)
- Enthusiasm for tasks in digital image processing, already experience in dealing with corresponding tools (e.g. Fiji, Python,…)
- Independent, structured and team-oriented way of working
These are your benefits:
- Working with a motivated team
- Independent work with needs-based support
- Processing of research-relevant questions
- Individual coordination of tasks and time frame
- Research and analysis tasks on the PC
- Short-term start possible / fast processing without delays
