Topic of the work:

Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) is a well-established method for studying thermal decomposition and oxidation behavior. This involves determining the change in mass of a sample as a function of temperature and/or time under a defined atmosphere (inert or oxidative). In research and development, large amounts of measurement data are generated, which are often stored in a decentralized and inconsistent manner. A structured materials database is used to systematically record and compare this data. This also makes the data usable for future analyses.

The tests conducted in the physics laboratory of the Center for Plastics Analysis and Testing (KAP) provide significant support to both industry and the institute’s own research efforts in validating quality and manufacturing parameters. The focus is on characterizing materials using thermal, spectroscopic, rheological, and chromatographic analyses in order to evaluate material behavior and thus provide a targeted assessment not only for research but also for industrial applications. Through these analyses, the laboratory provides essential insights for optimizing production processes and improving quality.

Objective:

The goal of this work is to establish a basis for more reliable interpretation of results from thermal analysis. To this end, the decomposition behavior, associated mass losses, and residues of known materials or groups of materials are to be determined using metrological methods and systematically recorded. This data will support the evaluation of the thermo-oxidative degradation behavior of unknown materials.
