Development of a technology demonstrator for thermoplastic elastomers

Bachelor- or Master thesis

Develop a component geometry that will be used to test materials and validate mechanical models.

Thermoplastic elastomers have many advantages over conventional elastomer materials in terms of processability, recyclability and mechanical properties. The materials are used in the automotive and food industries, as well as in medical technology. Typical applications are for haptic elements, seals and packaging. In a series of research projects, models have been developed at IKV to describe the mechanical behavior and processing properties of TPE. To date, the models developed have been validated on components that are available at IKV and are not used in applications. The aim of your work will be to develop a new demonstrator component for the injection molding process that contains the most important functional elements for the use of TPE. This geometry is then implemented in an injection mold. For the development, you will be in contact with representatives from the industry to determine the needs and challenges.

The work is related to this research project:

In the Department of Structural Analysis at IKV, two working groups deal with the mechanical modeling of elastomer materials and TPE. Suitable material models are developed and calibrated. The development of a technology demonstrator enables us to validate the models in realistic application areas.

Your task:

Identify relevant functions of TPE and create a list of requirements Identify relevant functions of TPE and create a list of requirements
Design and construction of the demonstrator component and process design Design and construction of the demonstrator component, process and tool design
Creation of parts lists and procurement
