Topic of the work:

Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX analysis) is a spectroscopy method that can be used for the chemical characterization of plastics and the fillers and reinforcing materials they contain. In addition to qualitative element identification, quantitative data can also be collected, but these can be influenced by a variety of parameters and properties (sample topography, material density, acceleration stress, etc.).

Since the specific effects of these influencing variables on the quantification result are generally not easy for the user to estimate, measurements/evaluations are often based on experience and show a large variance depending on the user. The aim of the work is to quantify a selected material under systematic variation of preparation and measurement conditions using EDX in order to be able to make a final evaluation or weighting of the influencing variables. Discrepancies between the results generated by EDX and those from, e.g. gravimetric methods and possible influencing factors are identified and discussed.

Objective:

The aim of this thesis is to develop a systematic procedure to analyze a selected material quantitatively using EDX. Variations of the sample preparation, the filler content if necessary, and analysis parameters are carried out and the results evaluated.

Your task:

The work is divided into the following steps:

  • Literature research (process, material used, etc.)
  • Joint development of an experimental plan
  • Sample preparation (variation)
  • Analysis of the material using EDX
  • Final evaluation of the generated results

Preferred study programs:

  • General mechanical engineering
  • Materials science
  • Applied chemistry
  • Applied Polymer Science
  • Industrial engineering, specialising in mechanical engineering

These are your benefits:

  • Working with a motivated team
  • Independent work with intensive support
  • Co-design of current research projects
  • Individual coordination of tasks and time frame
  • Fast processing, direct contact for questions during processing
  • Varied mix of research, experimental work in the lab and analytics
  • Immediate start possible
