Recycled plastics in high-performance lightweight components

Bachelor’s Thesis or Master’s Thesis

Investigations on the use of recycled materials in liquid impregnation processes for the production of continuous fiber-reinforced thermoplastic semi-finished products

Topic of the thesis:

The work deals with the production of unidirectional fiber-reinforced tape using polypropylene recyclate as a matrix material. The influence of various impurities on the fiber impregnation and the mechanical properties of the tape is being investigated.

Melt impregnation with recyclate as matrix material

The work is related to this research project:

The research project is a sub-project of the DediGrad Collaborative Research Center and deals with the production of graded, fiber-reinforced semi-finished products from recycled materials. Various tapes, profiles and press compounds are produced with different fiber volume contents and partly recycled plastics in order to be subsequently integrated into components in other sub-projects of the Collaborative Research Centre.

Objective:

The aim of the work is to examine recyclates, categorize impurities and determine their influence on semi-finished products. For this purpose, compounds are specifically contaminated to a certain degree and tapes are produced from this material. The mechanical properties and impregnation quality of the glass fiber should then be correlated with the type and degree of contamination.

Your task:

Research into typical impurities Analysis of recyclates
Compounding of specifically contaminated plastics Compounding of recyclates and specifically contaminated plastics
Tape production with these compounds Tape production with these compounds
Mechanical and optical analysis of semi-finished products Mechanical and optical analysis of semi-finished products

Your profile:

  • Technical or scientific degree (e.g. mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, CES, materials science)
  • Enjoy in-depth, independent research work
  • Motivated, careful and independent way of working
  • Interest in practical activities in the technical center
