Bachelor’s thesis or master’s thesis

The aim of your work will be to further develop an existing long-term test bench.

Test set-ups for various long-term tests at the Institute of Plastics Processing

Topic of the work:

For a safe component design, the consideration of long-term characteristic values in the plastics sector is indispensable. Reliable long-term data is particularly important in safety-relevant or long-life applications in order to design components correctly and avoid failures. The experimental determination of such characteristic values therefore forms an important basis for quality assurance and the material-specific design of technical plastic components.

The work is written in this working group:

Your thesis will be written in the mechanical testing department at the Center for Plastics Analysis and Testing (KAP) of the Institute of Plastics Processing (IKV). In mechanical testing, a large number of tests with different types of load are carried out as part of industrial projects and internal research at the institute. These range from short-term tests and crash tests to long-term tests that can last several weeks.

Scope of your thesis:

The aim of the work is to improve the measuring accuracy, data acquisition and automation of a long-term test bench in order to be able to carry out long-term tests under mechanical stress at different temperatures more reliably. As part of the work, existing components are to be analyzed, weak points identified and suitable optimization measures developed and implemented. This includes familiarization with the theoretical principles of materials testing, the design and preparation of technical drawings and the testing of the converted test rig.

Your task:

As part of your work, you will work on the following tasks:

  • Familiarization with the theoretical principles of mechanical material testing
  • Analysis of the current test bench and implementation of a requirements analysis
  • Development of solution concepts to improve measurement accuracy, data acquisition and automation
  • Further development of the test bench design, including production of CAD models and creation and derivation of technical drawings for new components and assemblies to be developed
  • Testing of the revised test bench through comparative long-term tests

Your profile:

  • You are studying in a technical or scientific field such as mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, materials science, environmental engineering or similar
  • You are interested in helping to shape forward-looking topics in materials science
  • Ideally, you already have practical experience with static or dynamic material tests
  • Interest in working independently in a motivated team
