Increasing production efficiency by making use of plastic mouldability of thermoset moulding compounds
This research project (EPForm) aims to explore how the plastic deformability of partially cross-linked thermosets can be purposefully used for post-processing and shape customisation. The main objective is to define a reliable processing window for warm forming and to provide practical guidelines for identifying this window during semi-finished product manufacturing.
The project systematically examines the entire process chain – from material production to component post-processing. The focus lies on fiber-reinforced plastics produced using low-pressure or pultrusion processes—techniques commonly applied by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). By applying controlled post-forming, part warpage can be corrected and scrap rates significantly reduced. Additionally, partially cross-linked materials allow for flexible geometries without requiring expensive custom molds.
The project will deliver validated material models to simulate plastic behavior and provide actionable instructions for implementation in industrial settings. SMEs can use these findings to increase production efficiency, offer customized parts more easily, and respond faster to market demands—all while saving materials and reducing waste. This research contributes to the economic and sustainable advancement of fiber-reinforced plastics.
