Research assistant in the field of additive manufacturing

Join our additive manufacturing team in the area of plant and process technology

For the research area ‘Additive Manufacturing – Plant and Process Technology’ we are looking for a research assistant (TV-L 13) to join our team at the earliest possible date.

About the field of work

Additive manufacturing processes enable the production of complex, functionally integrated geometries using a layer-based structure. The associated degrees of freedom enable the economical production of prototypes, customised individual components and small batches without the need for set-up processes. Additive manufacturing therefore offers the opportunity to revolutionise value chains.

IKV has been conducting research in the fields of utilisation and process and system development of additive manufacturing technologies for many years. The entire process is considered, from production-oriented design and application-centered material selection to the precise design and influencing of the process. In this context, the company developed its own systems for large-volume production and software systems for the economical control of large plant parks and the optimisation of web planning. By using these technologies, prototypes and small series, such as electric sports vehicles, could be produced in a very short time. In addition to the further development of system and process technology, future issues for the working group include increasing robustness and automation capability, e.g. by optimizing the layer adhesion and controlling the process variables, especially when processing recyclates.

Your task

As head of the working group, you will be responsible for scientific and financial planning and the implementation of research projects. You will initiate and work on publicly funded research projects as well as projects in direct cooperation with industry. In this context, you will actively participate in the definition of relevant questions and the derivation of new research ideas.

As part of this work, you will lead a motivated team of student assistants and supervise Bachelor’s and Master’s theses. You will also be responsible for teaching at RWTH Aachen University. They establish and maintain intensive contacts with numerous national and international industrial companies and research institutes. Of course, you will represent your specialist field in presentations and lectures at meetings, symposia and conferences.

Your qualification

You have a university degree (diploma or master’s degree) in mechanical engineering, automation technology, electrical engineering or a comparable field. Ideally, you already have practical experience in the application of additive manufacturing processes. You have experience in the areas of system architecture, computer-aided design, robotics, programming and control engineering or are able to familiarize yourself quickly with these topics.

You are characterized by a high degree of analytical and conceptual thinking skills. You enjoy working independently and are able to work on complex problems in a structured manner. You are also open in your dealings with other people and have the ability to motivate yourself and others. In addition to German, you have a very good command of written and spoken English. We expect you to be confident in using MS Windows and Office.

Our offer

We offer you an exciting, varied and versatile position in an open-minded, highly motivated team of scientists in which you will work independently.

Your tasks will enable you to have intensive contact with partners from both industry and science. In addition, we offer you the opportunity to do a doctorate in the above-mentioned subject area.
