Research assistant in the field of intelligent production systems

Join our team in the field of ‘Intelligent Production Systems’

To strengthen our team in the research area ‘Intelligent Production Systems’, we are looking for a research assistant (TV-L 13) to start as soon as possible. The focus is on the development of relevant use cases of software-supported assistance systems for plastics processing companies, especially in production, and the research and development of suitable models, algorithms and processes for the implementation of the systems.

About the field of work

The development, analysis and optimisation of plastics processing is one of IKV’s core competencies. In recent years, the development of technologies for digitizing and automating the production environment of plastics processing companies has given rise to extensive and complex research issues. In the DFG-funded Cluster of Excellence project “Internet of Production”, IKV is working on the fusion of advanced algorithms, modeling and machine learning on the one hand and industry-oriented injection moulding process engineering on the other to increase production efficiency for companies. Basic results can be tested, analysed and optimised for later industrial use directly in the Plastics Innovation Center 4.0 at IKV within the framework of a fully networked laboratory environment with an extensive, existing IT infrastructure.

Your challenge

The “Internet of Production” combines research from the fields of mathematics, computer science and production technology with around 25 jointly researching chairs at RWTH Aachen University. Knowledge transfer in the context of cooperation between researchers from different disciplines is a fundamental prerequisite for tackling research tasks. In order to increase production efficiency, especially in plastics and injection moulding companies, the aim is to develop new technologies based on extensive preliminary work. the following fields of work:

  • Analysis and evaluation of new technologies for modeling the injection moulding process
  • Combination of simulation, expert knowledge and data-based methods to create effective assistance systems
  • Further development of existing software and hardware infrastructure for data acquisition, process analysis and optimisation
  • Responsibility for a young and highly motivated research team in an interdisciplinary research project

Your profile

To strengthen our team, we are looking for a broad range of skills and individual interests in the fields of digitalisation, modelling, mathematics and software development.

The focus is on:

  • You are interested in management and development tasks and industry-related research in an intelligent production environment.
  • You enjoy working on complex, production-relevant contexts, both in a basic research-oriented manner and directly with industry partners.
  • You are interested in the analysis of interdependencies in injection moulding technology and other production technologies. You can easily familiarise yourself with the industry-specific requirements for the implementation of ergonomic assistance systems in order to make the cooperation between man and machine more efficient.
  • Ideally, you will have knowledge in the areas of human-machine interaction, digital production infrastructure and software development.
  • You understand data-based modeling methods and can use your mathematical and software engineering skills to tailor and further develop them for the use case with the help of existing open source software.
  • You are highly motivated, committed and able to work in a team and communicate well.
  • You have a university degree in engineering, industrial engineering, business informatics or computational engineering science with a special interest in data science, modeling and algorithms.

Our offer

We offer you an exciting, varied and versatile position in an open-minded, highly motivated team of scientists.

  • Independent design of the research area with the highest industrial relevance
  • Responsibility for challenging projects with specialist exchange with national and international research and industry partners
  • Possibility of a doctorate in an industrially and scientifically highly relevant field of research
  • Availability of industry-standard production facilities and innovative IT infrastructure
  • Access to one of the world’s largest networks in the field of plastics processing and all related industries
  • Professional exchange at national and international conferences and trade fairs
  • Establishing our own network with research and industry partners and colleagues on all relevant manufacturing processes
